Song Spotlight Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday: “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver” by Primus

As requested by a friend, I went with a song from the year 1991 as a throwback this week, and landed on one of Primus’s singles from their album Sailing the Seas of Cheese.

This rock/alternative/metal/progressive band has a WEIRD sound (and the video’s probably weirder) but the sound is unique/innovative  enough for me to have given it a chance and eventually have it grow on me. Essentially, Les Claypool and his ridiculous bass skills switch roles with guitarist Larry LaLonde in the band, with Claypool’s funky bass taking the lead and LaLonde’s screechy guitar providing the background noise. That is at least the way I listen to it, because aside from the guitar solo, Claypool’s bass riff is much more complex than the guitar in the song. Regardless of how you hear it, it’s an interesting twist, and it’s ultimately what separates the band from every other metal act from back in the day. Here’s to hoping you can learn to enjoy it the way I did. If you can’t, at least experience the funk below:
